How to Replace the Water Pump on Your Starweld 6002

By John Vandergriff | September 17, 2014

Time Needed: 30 minutes

Tools needed:

  • Allen wrenches - 3mm & 6mm
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Small Crescent wrench
  • Wire cutter/stripper
  • Electrical Tape
  • Towels
  • Bucket
  • 3/4" hose clamp (optional)

1.
Remove the cover on the lower back part of the laser welder.

2.
Unscrew the hose on top of the water filter and put it over the bucket. Turn the red knob on to start the water pump. Water will start to emtpy into the bucket. Turn the red knob off once there is no more water coming out of the hose. This will leave about 2 inches of water in the tank. Screw the house back onto the water filter and unplug the welder from electrical outlet.
3.
Remove the black bar by unscrewing the two 6mm allen screws on either side. Remove the two 3mm allen screws under the water tank and on top of the heat exchanger.
4.
Lay down the towels and remove the cooling unit. Unplug the two cables circled below to pull out further and rest it on the towels. (WARNING: Water may start to leak.) Disconnect the hose clamps attached to the water pump. The white hose clamp is plastic and may break. (use optional hose clamp to replace if this happens)
5.
Unscrew motor by removing the nuts from either side. Cut the black wire aboout 3 inches from the pump. Strip wires and connect the new pump. The wires will match up.
6.
Screw the new motor on and attach the lower hose. Prime the pump with water and attach the top hose. Fill the tank with water and plug cables back in.
7.
Plug the welder back into the electrical outlet. Turn the red knob on and leave the pump on for ten seconds. Turn the pump off for 30 seconds and then back on for 10 seconds. Repeat 3 more times.
It is very important to prime the pump this way or the pump may fail.
8.
Check for any leaks. Push the cooling unit back into the laser and replace screws. Fill the tank and let pump run for 30 minutes before using.
