Look at the Details
Before making any cuts, take the time to closely inspect the ring. It’s important to identify the type of metal you’re working with — whether it’s platinum, gold, contemporary meta types, or a specific alloy — since each metal requires specific handling during the resizing process. Additionally, consider any unique features, such as engravings or stones, that need to be preserved.
REMEMBER:
If your customer’s ring is set, you will want to remove any center, side, or accent stones from the mounting to avoid damaging them during the repair process.
Get the Ring Ready
Proper preparation is essential for a successful resize. Begin by cleaning the ring to remove any dirt or debris that could interfere with the laser welding process. Then, secure the ring on your mandrel to accurately measure its current size, and mark the point where you’ll make your cut.

A Step-by-Step Guide
Step One: Measurement
Start by measuring the current size of the ring using the mandrel. Determine the desired final size based on the customer’s request and double-check for accuracy. This ensures the ring will fit perfectly after resizing.
Step Two: Marking Your Cuts
Carefully mark the points on the base of the mounting where you will make your cuts. For downsizing, mark the section to be removed. For upsizing, mark where you will add extra material.
Step Three: Sawing Away the Excess
If downsizing, use a ring cutter or saw to remove the excess material. Make a straight, clean cut to facilitate easier welding and a better finish.
Step Four: Closing the Gap
After removing excess material, align the cut ends of the ring so they meet perfectly without gaps. This is crucial for creating a strong, seamless weld.
Step Five: Making Initial Welds
First, make sure to have a flush cut. Use the laser welder to make small, overlapping welds completely around the cut point — a full 360 degrees around the entire piece. Be patient with this step to ensure each weld connects to the last, and to avoid “pockets,” which can cause brittleness.
Step Six: Adding Wire
Adjust your laser welder to a lower spot size for deeper penetration of the laser wire, especially around the ring’s curvature. Insert enough wire to fill the gap, holding it like a pen and feeding it into the heat without aiming the laser directly at the tip to avoid balling or pits.
Step Seven: Blending Your Added Metal
Increase the spot size on your laser welder and go all the way around the added metal to blend it smoothly. Use a zigzag motion to ensure an even finish. Once blended, round it out and prep your ring as usual.
Step Eight: Final Touches
Once welding is complete, smooth the inside of the ring with sandpaper and round out the shape as needed. Lightly file the outside to blend and reshape the metal, avoiding flat spots. Finish with a buff stick and finer sandpaper before polishing for a smooth, polished look.
