Step 1: Thread the Jump Ring

To start the assembling process, thread the jump ring through the chain and the bottom loop of the lobster clasp using a pair of pliers. Make sure that the jump ring is tight and aligned when closing it. This will keep the jump ring from opening or breaking when it is worn.

Step 2: Position the Clasp

Prepare the clasp and jump ring for soldering by placing the chain, lobster clasp, and jump ring on the soldering board. Face the jump ring away from the clasp closer to your person and coat the piece with a ceramic coating and flux. Now, the piece is ready for soldering.

Step 3: Solder the Jump Ring

Light your torch and ensure it is at an even temperature before solder as torches can become extremely hot, which can melt the insides of the clasp. Ensure the torch is not directly on the components of the clasp.

Using a solder pick, gently heat the solder balls to pick one up and carefully place it on the jump ring, making sure that the solder does not attach to the clasp. While you are soldering the ring, use the pick as a heat sink, which is when an object is used to absorb excessive or unwanted heat. This can be done by holding the solder pick slightly above the clasp, blocking any heat that is not directed towards the jump ring.

Step 4: Clean the Jump Ring

Since Firescoff® was used on the piece, you won’t need to use a pickle pot to clean it — all you’ll need to do is place the piece in warm water for a few minutes. Ensure that it is thoroughly cleaned by moving the piece around for a couple of seconds.

Step 5: Inspect the Clasp

Now that you have finished soldering the jump ring to the clasp, it’s time to inspect the piece. Holding the chain, gently tug it to ensure the jump ring is properly soldered. Make sure you swing the chain around in case the solder may have adhered to the chain as well. Open and close the lobster clasp a few times to make sure the components of the clasp have not melted.
