Changing the Karat of Gold

Sometimes it’s necessary to raise or reduce the karatage in a quantity of gold. Although this sounds difficult, with a little bit of math, raising or reducing the gold karatage is simple.

Raising Karat

To Raise Karat:

Karatage is increased by adding pure (24k) fine gold.

Find your karat on hand in the left column and read across to your desired karat. The number you find at the intersection is your raising factor. Multiply the weight of your karat gold on hand by this raising factor. The product is the weight of fine gold you must add to raise to karat wanted.

Reducing Karat

To Reduce the Karat:

Karatage is reduced by adding an alloy mix.

Find your karat on hand in the left column and read across to your desired karat. The number you find at the intersection is your reducing factor. Multiply the weight of your karat gold on hand by this reducing factor. The product is the weight of the alloy gold you must add to reduce to the karat wanted.
